Operational reviews, planning, automation and AI.

Four practices that take you from diagnosing the problem to running a plant on stable, on-time execution. We recommend the fix, build it, then stay until your team owns it.

01 · Diagnose

Operational Reviews

A Centre of Business consultant runs the review. Not a survey and not a report that lands in a drawer. We sit with the people who take the orders, make the plan and run the floor. We ask the questions they already argue about, map how work actually flows, and leave you with a sequenced plan of what to fix first. Then we stay and manage the project that plan creates.

  • Consultant in the room: interviews across order intake, planning, inventory, production and dispatch
  • How work actually flows, not how the procedure says it should
  • Root cause on late deliveries and firefighting, using the numbers you already fight over
  • A roadmap sequenced by return: what to fix first, what it is worth, what not to touch yet
  • We design, build and embed the work the review said to do, until your team owns it

The review is not the product. The change that holds is. If the answer is planning, we stay for planning. If it is automation, we stay for the build. Your people run it when we leave.

A roadmap
Then we stay for the project it creates. Earlee: review into S&OP, delivery IFOT +113%, stockouts −27%. FLSmidth: scoped automation, 10:1.
The operational audit undertaken by Centre of Business provided valuable insights into our business and highlighted both our strengths and opportunities for further improvement. The review process was efficient, collaborative, and supported by a comprehensive report containing practical recommendations. Craig Bennett's understanding of operational and manufacturing environments ensured the outcomes were relevant and actionable. We would happily recommend Centre of Business to organisations looking to improve operational performance and maturity.

02 · Stabilise

Planning & Inventory

Get the inventory mix right. We tune replenishment, MRP settings and demand signals to cut stockouts and excess at the same time, bringing weeks-of-cover down without putting supply at risk while freeing the working capital trapped in the wrong stock.

  • Demand and replenishment planning that holds
  • MRP and safety-stock settings tuned to your reality
  • Inventory rebalancing, less excess, fewer stockouts
  • Working capital released from slow-moving stock

27%
Fewer stockouts at Earlee Products, alongside a 113% improvement in delivery IFOT and 13% less stock cover.
03 · Automate

Systems & Automation

Make the numbers trustworthy, then act on them. We retire spreadsheet-driven operations with Power BI reporting, Power Apps and transactional automation, so the manual busywork runs itself and your team sees what's happening in real time.

  • Purchase-order and transactional automation
  • Power BI dashboards for real-time visibility
  • Power Apps for the workflows spreadsheets can't handle
  • Guaranteed policy adherence through automation

04 · Apply AI

AI & Automation

Some of the most expensive work in a business is a person reading a document and typing it somewhere else. We use AI to read unstructured inputs, validate them against your own records and hand a clean, checked result to your ERP, so exceptions get human attention and the rest just runs.

  • Reads customer purchase orders in whatever format they arrive
  • Validates against your pricing and customer records
  • Formats and loads straight into the ERP as a sales order
  • Flags only the exceptions that need a human

How we work

Architect and builder.

Strategy consultants hand over a plan. We design the improvement, build the tools behind it and stay until your team can run it without us.

01

Diagnose

Understand the people, process and technology and pinpoint where delivery breaks down.

02

Design

Shape the fix with your team: practical, sequenced by impact and grounded in your reality.

03

Build

Build the dashboards, apps and automation that make the change real and under budget.

04

Embed

Hand over capability, not dependency. When we leave, your people run what we built.

Common questions

Questions we get asked.

The things operations and supply chain leaders ask us before they engage.

Why do we get stockouts and excess stock at the same time?

Because inventory is an outcome, not a lever. It is the result of demand uncertainty, planning rules, lead times and execution discipline all interacting. Pulling stock down across the board cuts cover on the lines you need while leaving capital tied up in the ones you do not. The fix is to tune replenishment, MRP settings and demand signals per line, which is how you bring both numbers down together. At Earlee Products this moved stockouts down 27% and stock cover down 13% at the same time.

We already have an ERP. Why has it not fixed our planning?

An ERP is excellent at recording what happened. That does not make it a decision-support system. Most reporting looks backwards, and planning latency, meaning how fast the organisation recognises change and responds to it, is usually a week or more. The gap is not the ERP, it is the planning layer on top of it and the discipline around how people transact in it.

How long before we see a return?

We target fast, measurable payback rather than multi-year programmes. The transactional supply automation build for FLSmidth broke even in five weeks and returned 10:1 on the purchase order component alone within three months of go-live. Timeframes depend on scope, but if a piece of work cannot pay for itself quickly we will say so before you commit.

What actually happens in an operational review?

A Centre of Business consultant runs it. We sit with the people who take the orders, make the plan and run the floor, map how work actually flows, and argue the numbers they already fight over. You get a sequenced roadmap of what to fix first and what it is worth. Then we stay and manage the project that roadmap creates until your team can run it. The five reviews companies ask for are S&OP Readiness, a Manufacturing Plant Review, a General Business Overview, delivery reliability, and an AI Check.

What does an operational review cost?

$5,000 +GST for each review. For a limited number of customers, the first one is free. That is the consultant-led review and the sequenced roadmap. The project that follows is scoped separately.

Do you just make recommendations, or do you implement?

We implement. Strategy consultants hand over a plan and leave. We design the improvement, then build the dashboards, applications and automation behind it, integrated with your ERP, and stay until your team can run it without us. That is the difference between a report and a change that holds.

What kinds of businesses do you work with?

Manufacturers and distributors, with particular depth in food, FMCG and inventory-heavy operations. Clients include FLSmidth, Earlee Products (the FIAQ 2023 Queensland Manufacturer of the Year) and Vege Chips. We work Australia-wide, both on-site and remotely.

Can AI realistically help our operation, or is it hype?

It helps where the work is high-volume, rules-based and currently manual. A concrete example we have delivered: reading incoming customer purchase orders, validating them against pricing and customer records, then formatting the result for load into the ERP as a sales order. That is a real task, done many times a day, with a measurable time saving. We would not recommend AI where a simpler automation does the job.

What does the free consultation involve?

Ninety minutes, no cost and no obligation. You tell us what is happening in your operation now and what your goal is. We ask questions, and you leave with a prioritised view of what is holding your delivery performance back. If you would rather see software than talk consulting, we will walk you through our planning platform, CheckSetGo or the Safety Reporting System instead.
